Had an appointment for a trim on my hair this morning. Today is picture day. We had picture today for Sea Salts (our name for lifelong learners). Then this afternoon we had a picture of everyone on the whole ship. That is a lot of people gathered in one spot. Tonight we met with several groups to reflect what we saw in India. It was very interesting to hear what everyone’s opinion was. Then they served us cookies and milk. Went to bed at 10:00 PM as I am still exhausted from our trip. We had very little sleep. It will take a few days to catch up.

This morning we have global studies. We will hear more about Tsunami off Japan. It sounds like many people are hurt , died or disappeared completely. It was a horrible tragedy. Have not heard yet if we will be going there. This afternoon we watched the movie, “Water”. It is about India and was very interesting. Tonight after dinner the crew from this ship puts on a show for us. It was eleven different performances. Some of singing, orchestra and dances. Mostly very funny and entertaining. Turned clocks ahead one hour again tonight.
Monday, March 14, 2011
Today I am still tired and we turn clocks ahead again one hour. Went to breakfast and came back to my room and slept. Tonight we turn clocks back one hour again. We are now 13 hours ahead of Minnesota. This afternoon I have been reading my book. Just still feel really tired today but will catch up on sleep tonight.

Tomorrow we go to Singapore. It is a country not a city. It is supposed to be very beautiful. We will only be there for the day. It will be hot and humid. We got the green sheet telling us about it. We are going on a city orientation to see the city. We have to get our passport stamped in morning before we get off of the ship. Watched movies of Vietnam tonight in our room as this is our next stop.

We are now in Singapore. It is a beautiful country. We left and went on a bus tour to see the sights here. Everything is very clean and green here. They have beautiful churches, temples and mosques here. They also have two casinos here which you can go into and play. It is free for visitors. If you live here it costs you $100 to get in the door. If you want to buy a car it is $100,000 for a permit to buy. After the tour Carol and I went to Seaport Shopping Center. Went to McDonalds for lunch. Tasted very American to me. The place was packed. They also have Starbucks coffee and Subway. It is very Americanized. Highlights – Raffles Hotel (home of the Singapore Sling drink) cost is $25 for one – Chinatown, nice art work – Three towers 55 stories high – subway system – shuttles $6.00 – Botanic Gardens with very pretty flowers, especially orchids and taxis which are reasonable to use. There are restaurants everywhere to eat and food is safe to eat. Very modern place. I enjoyed.

St. Patrick’s Day – Played hand and foot with new partners today. Really enjoyed at 5:30 PM the faculty treated us to drinks and snacks. We had some St. Patrick’s Day dancing and singing. We all had on something green – mostly shirts and scarves. It was very festive and we all enjoyed. We are now going to Taiwan instead of Japan. Right now they really have their problems and they don’t need us there to add to their problems. Anyway it was a fun day.
Friday, March 18, 2011
Went to exercise this morning. Then started a new book, “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Stenbeck. I read this book 50 years ago. The epic story of the Joad’s family migration from the Oklahoma dust bowl to the promised land of California during the great depression years. Then this afternoon I played hand and foot with Linda, Carol, Laura and myself. At 4:30 we had meeting on Vietnam. Ho Chi Ming City. At 5:30 PM Boyd, Betty and I had our extended family for a pizza party. At 7:30 we received the green sheet and what to expect in Vietnam. Very busy day.
Saturday, March 19, 2011
We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam also known as Saigon. This afternoon we went on a city orientation tour. The guide speaks English and explained things that we saw in English. They have many shopping centers and lots to buy. They use dong but I used mostly American dollars and they seem willing to take them. Everyone here drives motor scooters and they go in every direction along with taxis, buses, and autos. They do not pay attention to people walking and you take your chances when crossing the street. They do not speak much English and we do not speak their language. But I think they want to be westernized.
Sunday, March 20, 2011
This morning we had to be up at 4:15 AM and depart for the airport. We flew to Hanoi and had lunch there. Transferred to Halong and had dinner in local restaurant. Stayed overnight at Ha Long Grand Hotel in Ha Long Bay. Visited burial site in Hanoi of Ho Chi Minh. Actually saw him in coffin. Also saw Presidential Palace where warfare was conducted. Also saw house where he lived from May 1958 to August 1969. Also saw war rooms in the palace and place where his cars are kept and phones for warfare.
Monday, March 21, 2011
Check out of hotel. Depart for four hour boat ride in Halong Bay including seafood lunch on board. Lunch was served with white dishes, white tablecloths and red napkins. Very festive and good. Also on board they were selling real pearls, other jewelry, neck scarves, and fancy bags to put jewelry or other trinkets in. Boats came alongside and hitched to our boat to sell food – pineapple, bananas, etc. Halong Bay is beautiful. Check in hotel and dinner at restaurant and then water puppet show. Overnight at Star View Hotel.
Tuesday, March 22, 2011
Breakfast, check out of hotel and depart for Hanoi City tour including Quan Thanh Temple. Also went to war museum – American planes crashed and burned and also American tanks, guns, etc. Brought back many memories of war years there. Then drive to airport for Vietnam Airlines flight to Saigon. Next a bus trip back to the ship. It was a very busy trip but also interesting.
Wednesday, March 23, 2011
This morning Carol and I took the shuttle bus from the ship to downtown Rex Hotel where we walked to a shopping center. Then from there we walked to a pedicure place and I had a pedicure and Carol had a pedicure and a manicure. It cost me $15 including a $5 tip. That was pretty cheap compared to what you pay in MN. We are now going to get ready for China and the Great Wall.

Bike, breakfast and finished my book. Started a new one “A Tiger’s Heart” – very interesting – written by Aisling Juanjuan Shen about a modern Chinese Woman. It takes place from 1974 to 2009. She really overcomes a lot of struggles of a Chinese woman. Our group “The Sea Salts” are giving a performance tonight and we are practicing this morning at 7:00 AM and giving the performance tonight at 7:00 PM. Played hand and foot with Linda, Laura, Pat Bender and myself this afternoon. Had a tour of where they store the extra food and liquor on the ship. Had preport on India. To me it is complicated with all the Hindu gods, castes and the untouchables. Many classes of people. Hard to believe.
Saturday, March 5, 2011
Today breakfast, bike and Global Study class. It was very interesting. The class was on Singapore which we are going to after India. This afternoon we had a speaker on what to say to Indians. We had a pizza party tonight with Dave and Jean and their extended family. Then we went to the union where we did our Indian dance and chant. It was a big success and they asked us to do it again at the end of the performance. Then everyone joined in. Got our green sheet tonight as tomorrow we will be in Chennai, India port. It is a dangerous place and we are asked to be very careful.

Happy Birthday to Drew (9), Dawn (10) and Bailey (13)!
We are in port in Chennai, India. We go thru immigration first and carry our real passports with us. This we have not done in other ports. It is a huge place here with millions of people. This afternoon at
1:00 PM we are going on a city orientation tour. We will get back to ship today at 6:00 PM. Tomorrow we leave for Taj Mahal. We go by bus, train, and airlines. It will take several hours to get there. Yesterday we stopped at San Thome(St. Thomas in English) Cathedral Basilica. It is supposed to be the only place where Christ is shown completely clothed. When waiting by shops I saw a cow walk down a busy street. She looked pregnant and didn’t have a care in the world. It is very dirty in the streets and shoes all over the place. People walk barefoot everywhere. Some places were really strong with odors. They have tons of vendors on the street selling everything you can think of. Went by beach on the ocean. It was beautiful. People go there on Sundays and meet with family and friends. Most people were friendly and stared at us as much as we did them.
Monday, March 7, 2011
This morning we all went shopping at a large mall shopping center. Then we walked over to a 5 star hotel and had lunch which Dave and Jean treated us to. Then Jean, Carol and I rode back in a 3 wheeler open air tuk tuk. I wish you could have seen my face when I washed the dirt off. The traffic here is horrendous – everyone honking the horns continually and everyone going in different directions. We are leaving today for Taj Mahal at 4:00 PM. Transfer to the domestic airport – depart for Delhi by air. Arrive and go to Hotel Ramada Plaza – overnight in Delhi.
Tuesday, March 8, 2011
5:15 AM to railway station – Leave Delhi for Agra. Arrive Agra and proceed to Gateway Hotel. There are many homeless people sleeping on floor of railway station. They beg for food and money. The floors are very dirty. Also lots and lots of people hovering over you to buy trinkets. Then visit to Taj Mahal – very beautiful place. People there selling trinkets – post cards, books, jewelry, etc. Then on to Varanasi to stay at Gateway Hotel. Rode in rickshaw to see Ghat at River Ganges. Carol and I rode together and a man rides bike to river. Then back to Gateway for dinner. At 5:00 AM back to river and on boat to see sunrise. They have people washing clothes on rocks, people bathing, people burning dead people and preparing for funeral. Watching all this from boats. Buildings are hundreds of years old and some are very colorful. Beautiful sunrise! This is a very sacred place. Then on to an old city with streets where only one person can pass through. Lots of cows and animals also live there. We walked on streets with lots of cow shit. Vendors are also there trying to see you something. People everywhere. Then breakfast at hotel and tour of city. Most roads are dirt and very crooked and bumpy. Saw forts and other old buildings and always vendors and cars honking continuously. Our tour guide has a PHD and his wife was a lawyer. They have two children 5 and 3. Very interesting person. He has lived here all his life and does not want to ever move from here. Then back on two different planes (Spice Jets) name of airlines. Arrived back on boat at 12:00 AM. Busy time but interesting.
Friday, March 11, 2011
Did some shopping this morning in Chennai. Then lunch at Taj. Very nice restaurant and hotel. Spencer Shopping Center next. Had to be on ship tonight and turn passport back. We are now sailing again and next stop will be Singapore.

It was another busy day today. This morning I went on the bike for 30 minutes. Then I got my hair done. It is getting long. This afternoon we played cards. Hand and Foot. It sure is a popular game on this ship. This early evening we watched Shutter Island with Leonardo De’Caprio. Carol and I really enjoyed it. Then about 9:30 we went to deck seven and watched square dancing with live music. It was really fun to watch. Also at 5:30 tonight I had extended family for dinner and we had oreo cookies. It was a big hit.
Saturday, February 26, 2011
Today did bike for 30 minutes. Played hand and foot this afternoon. Then to a talk on our upcoming trip to India. It will be difficult to use my left hand because that is a no no in India. Sometimes it is not fun being left handed. Tomorrow we will be in Port Louis, Mauritius just for one day. It will be nice to be off the ship even for only one day. After sailing it is nice to be on land. We got green sheet today and going on city orientation tomorrow.
Sunday, February 27, 2011
Got to Mauritius Island this morning. It is very nice looking from the ship – very lush and green. We left at 9:00 AM for a bus tour of the island. Went to a fort in the hills where they had cannons years ago to watch for undesirables trying to take over the land. It is very hot and humid here and rainy at times. From there we went to the botanical garden. Saw many old trees and flowers. After walk thru we ate a box lunch from the ship. All the shops here close on Sunday at 1:00 PM. I guess most of the people go to church. This is an island where wealthy people come to vacation (mostly European countries) like US go to Hawaii. Also things to buy are very spendy. Tonight we leave for India. Will not get there until next Sunday, another seven days on the ship. Carol and I are invited to the captains dinner on March 1, Tuesday. We sang this song on Friday when we met with our extended family for dinner.

Today breakfast, bicycle. Read and then lunch. Tonight we are having snacks, wine, beer or mixed drinks with the faculty, lifelong learners and teachers and wives of teachers. It turned out very well and we made lots of new friends. Had a quick supper and then back to union for report on student that ended up in hospital from over drinking. Don’t know if he will be coming back to ship or not. Next we went to a very interesting women’s seminar. Most of the students are very polite and nice.
Tuesday, March 1, 2011
Went to breakfast, then global studies and then bike for 30 minutes. Played hand and foot this afternoon and then LL meeting. Tonight we were invited to the captains dinner. First I had a vodka tonic cocktail and snacks in Glazer Lounge at 7:30 PM. Dinner was served in the Aquamarine Dining Room at 8:00 o’clock. We had scallops on the first plate, then cream of asparagus soup, then caesar salad, the wonderful steak (Beef Wellington), garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus, green beans, carrots, bread sticks, wine and all you wanted to drink, then a chocolate dessert that was wonderful and very good coffee. It was all wonderful food and we really enjoyed.

Today we had three people leave the ship because of illness. We stopped in ocean by Diego Garcia Island. Boats came out to us. They got on ship with machine guns and a dog. Also a submarine was near us in the water. The island is owned by the Brits but the US leases from them. It has been used a lot by US to refuel and they have long runways. It is heavily guarded as we have used it as a military base. It is all top secret. After they cleared the ship they went back to island and two US boats came on board to pick up sick passengers they could not help on our ship. This afternoon we played hand and foot. At 4:30 PM we had our usual meeting. Tonight we turned the clock back one hour. We are now 11 hours ahead of you in MN. We will be getting to India on Sunday.
Thursday, March 3, 2011
We had global studies this morning with some interesting speakers on songs in India. Also had a speaker on trying to change water. Babies being born in a clean environment. This is in a small village of 40,000 people. In India there are millions of people but you have to start somewhere. Then I went on bike. At 2:00 PM we played hand and foot. I am also reading a book by Tami Hoag. A murder mystery with grade school children. At our 4:30 meeting we had a speaker on Hindu Dieties. He showed slides of different Hindu Gods. Then we had our extended family for dinner and an ice cream cake. Also some snacks from our trip on Mauritius Island. It is fun to talk with students. We meet every week or two and they are very friendly and tell us about other students. Interesting – another busy day. We sang this song with our extended family today.
Tune: Are You Sleeping Brother John
We’re not rowing
But we’re going
To Chennai! To Chennai!
Africa’s behind us
India’s a fine place!
Beat the drum!

Today we got to get off the ship and see some of Cape Town. It is really a beautiful place. We did some shopping and looked around a bit. Then we met Dave for a glass of wine at an outdoor café and watched people. It was really fun sitting and watching. It was very crowded as Bono & U2 were performing at the soccer stadium which is close to downtown area. The weather here has been beautiful –very summer like. I hear MN has cold and snow. I hope it is gone when I get home. Thanks to those of you who commented on my blog. I don’t know if my kids read it or not. I don’t hear.
*Saturday, February 19, 2011
Today a group of us took two taxis and went on a tour of Cape Town area. We saw many interesting sights. Stopped at a place called Simeon Town. I bought a table cloth with elephants on it in the colors of blue and white. I hope it looks nice on my dining room table. Stopped at a nice restaurant named Two Oceans Restaurant at Cape of Good Hope in Table Mountain National Park. This is the most southwesterly point of Africa. Had a margarita which was very good and also a good hamburger and french fries. It was a beautiful view. We could see both the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Then we stopped at a diamond mine. From there to more craft shops. On the way to the National Park we saw monkeys two different times. You have to lock doors and keep windows rolled up as they know how to open doors. We also saw ostriches and penguins. On the way back we saw beautiful white sand beaches and lots of good sightseeing. It was a fun day.
Sunday, February 20, 2011
Today we are on a trip to Aguila Game Reserve. It is a day trip and we will be back to the ship around 5:00 PM. We had breakfast when we arrived. Then we went on covered 4X 4’s on dirt roads into the reserve to see some animals. These are the animals we saw: ostrich, spring bok, elephants (wide ears shape of Africa), zebras, cape buffalo, wild swan, rhinos (life span 45 years), giraffe (biggest heart of any animal and has 7 vertebrae in its neck and can’t eat from the ground because the blood pressure would go too low). A dairy cow has the 2nd largest heart. We also saw wildebeest, antelope, horses, lions, and a hippo which is the most dangerous animal in Africa.
On the way we also saw wine bushes, geranium plants and many flowers. We also saw warthogs,, cheetas and crocodiles. We got back to hotel and had lunch about 1:15 PM and then did a little shopping. At 2:30 we got back on the bus to go back to the ship. Then after dinner Carol and I went to one of the shopping centers and I bought postcards and she bought some things for her grandkids. Got back about 9:00 PM – interesting day. Had wine in the field half way on trip to reserve.
Monday, February 21, 2011
Today we did a little shopping. Had lunch on the ship and then went on Red Line Bus Tour. It cost 120 rands or $16.50 and it takes you on a tour of the whole city. You can stop at places of interest or stay on the tour. It takes about 2 1/2 hours. They have ear phones and they tell you about the places you are seeing. It was very interesting and many people got on and off at different stops. It is a double decker bus and many people ride on it. At the top you get a beautiful view of the whole city area. We really enjoyed – worth the money
Tuesday, February 22, 2011 (Terry Englund Birthday)
This is the last day in Cape Town. It is a beautiful city and I really enjoyed seeing it. Today I went shopping and bought a new grey sweater and denim shirt. Also some snacks. We had tacos on the ship tonight for dinner. We all had to turn in our passports today. And we sailed out at 8:00 PM. We are now on the Indian Ocean. It is a little bumpy on the ship today. We stood outside tonight watching as the ship left Cape Town. Furthest away I have been from MN.
Wednesday, February 23, 2011
Today we are at sea. Went to Global Studies this morning. It is always an interesting class. The Indian Ocean is pretty choppy today. I have to hang on railings. This afternoon at 4:30 PM we had our regular meeting with lifelong learners. Then tonight meeting with my group to discuss what we thought of South Africa and Cape Town. There is a lot of classes of people plus a lot of poverty that you do not see in the places that we saw. Classes – white, African, Black and Negros

Today I went on the bike for 30 minutes. I feel like my knee is healed completely. Read my book this morning. Then after lunch Laura, Linda, Carol and I played hand and foot. It seems like everyone on the ship is playing this game now. Went up to the usual meeting at 4:30 PM. Then we went to Joe and Chris’s room for a drink. After that we had dinner. I came back and took a shower and am going to bed early tonight as we lost another hour last night. We will be on land again Sunday. I sent out postcards to everyone. Don’t know when you will get them.

Tonight we turn the clocks back an hour again. Here it is 2:45 PM and in Mpls. it is 6:35 AM
I have a new pen pal. He is in Becky Hart’s class. His name is Sahel from Bangladesh. Here is my first letter to him.
Hi! My name is Phyllis Englund and I am from MN. I am an aunt to Becky Hart who is your teacher. I understand you would like to have a pen pal and I would too.
I am on a trip around the world now and will not be back to MN till April 25. We are currently on our way to Cape Town, South Africa. I will do some shopping and sightseeing while I’m there.
Tell me the things you like to do. Are you interested in sports? Do you like living in MN? How old are you?
I am a mother and grandmother. I have 13 grandchildren. Their ages are from 23 to 8. I also have one great grandchild that is 6 months old.
I look forward to hearing from you. Your new pen pal, Phyllis

Today we went to breakfast and then exercise. We got our green sheet and were told what to expect tomorrow when we land in Cape Town. Today it is very windy and white caps on the ocean. We should be landing about 8:00 AM tomorrow. We hear from others it is a beautiful place to see. I am looking forward to seeing it. This is where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans come together. Last night was a very bumpy ride. Not much sleep. Thanks for the comments to those who replied.

Today we got to see Cape Town from our ship. It looks beautiful but could not go into port because of the wind. It is dangerous and the captain can’t take that chance. It is hard to walk at times and articles get tossed on the floor from dressers. Fortunately I haven’t gotten seasick yet. Several people played hand and foot this afternoon for something to do. Hope we get to port tomorrow. Happy Birthday Lily!

Went on bike today. Had Global class this morning. It has been so interesting. I’m glad I don’t have to take tests though I like the students. They work very hard and have a lot of homework and preparation. After lunch this afternoon, Jean, Carol, Linda and I played Hand and Foot . I’m trying to learn to count. Had meeting at 4:00 PM to discuss what we have seen in Ghana. It’s interesting to hear other people’s view of city. Had dinner then listened to a speaker on Cape Town which is our next stop.
Saturday, February 12, 2011
Had breakfast. Read my book. I have been tired today. Tonight we had our extended family for dinner and then we had an ice cream cake for them. It was chocolate and white ice cream and decorated very nicely with sprinkles and said “To our Extended Family”. The students all enjoyed and so did we, Betty, Boyd and myself. We had too much so we had them send their friends over for ice cream cake too. They were happy to share with us. Tonight we set clocks ahead one hour again. I think we are about six hours ahead of MN now. Today went across 0/0 latitude and longitude.
Sunday, February 13, 2011
Went to breakfast and then to Global class and then for a ride on bike. Played hand and foot this afternoon with Carol, Laura and Linda. We are all learning to count. Had meeting at 4:30. We had students and lifelong learners show us pictures and talk about the poverty and bad conditions in Ghana. It is really sad. Drinks in Joe’s room before having dinner. Then we played cards again tonight. Days sure go by fast here. Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone in my family.
Monday, February 14, 2011
Breakfast and then bike. Read my book. Then meeting at 4:00 PM. We had an interesting speaker from Cape Town talk and she was very interesting. Told us about the city and what places we should be careful of going. Always go in numbers. Saturday we are going to rent a bus for day (12 of us) and go shopping and sightseeing. That will be fun. After dinner tonight we played cards.
Is anyone reading the blog? I never have comments. Please let me know how everyone is. Does anyone talk with Diane? Does Dord read the blog? Let me know. Love, Phyl

Today we went to Ghana for Twin City orientation. Left ship at 9:45 and onto bus. It is quite a ways from the ship to town. It would be a long hot walk. We went to a fishing village and the children were very excited to see us. They all wanted their pictures taken and then to see them. We saw how they make boats and saw the casting out of nets, saw fish drying. Women carrying babies on their backs while they do their carrying jars, etc. on their heads. I don’t think I could do that. It’s an art. Went to lunch to a nice restaurant and then more sightseeing. Back at ship at 3:00. Then up to top deck of ship for a nice cool ice cream cone. It felt good to take a nice cool shower. Later Carol and I walked off ship to a few shops where the vendors were selling various items. It was very interesting. They have colorful items everywhere. Had dinner and went to bed at 10:00 as we are going again tomorrow at 7:15 to see Kakum National Park and Bamboo Orchestra. Will be gone most of the day. This is what they tell us and the students:
Don’t get bit
Don’t get hit
Don’t get lit
Don’t do it
Don’t eat shit
Monday, February 7, 2011
We had a fun time today. It took about two hours to get to Kakun National Forest. It was an interesting drive as we went thru many little villages and they all have little huts where they sell their wares. You see chickens and goats and dogs. The women and men too can really balance items on their head. They have straight posture too. They even carry their babies on their backs and carry items on their head with ease. They sell many different fruits and bread and rolls that they have made. Of course we are told not to eat anything from them. Then we stopped at a hotel and restaurant to eat lunch. Afterward we went outside to see Bamboo Orchestra and dancers. We sat under a canopy so it was shady but still very hot. They performed about an hour and even got the audience dancing. It was very hot for the dancers in the sun. I’m glad I was in the shade. Then we took the bus back to the ship. Left at 7:30 this morning and got back about 5:00 so it was a full day. Tomorrow we go to a water village.
Tuesday, February 8, 2011
Yesterday we went to a water village on the bus. It took about 2 ½ hours to get there. Then we got life jackets on and walked down to a little stream, got in canoes that were about 2 inches from the water. It was a hair razing experience for me. I was really scared!! Went on stream for about 2 miles and then on lake and then to an Indian village on stilts on the water. I was so scared I could hardly move. We took a tour of the village which was on water also. Watched the little children and then went to the chief’s son for a visit. We walked on boards to get around the village. The kids go to school on the village. They have free uniforms, get books free, pens and pencils. It is free for them and paid for by the government.
They have to go to school thru 9th grade. The people were friendly and seemed to like us. We then got into the canoes and went back across lake and then downstream again for two miles. Back on land again and then to lunch right by Atlantic Ocean. It was beautiful and very nice breeze. I really, really liked being on land again. Do not plan on going on a canoe ever again. I’m glad I did the canoe thing but no more!!

Had kind of a quiet day today and it was nice not to be rushed. This morning I read my book and relaxed. Went down to the shopping center close to the ship. After lunch, Dick, Linda, Laura and I took the shuttle to the start of the town, then took a taxi to the post office and then to downtown area. It is a very busy place and not very clean. We had a few people begging us. They sell everything you can think of right on the streets – shoes, furniture, food, fish, fruit, etc. Most people are friendly. Interesting day.
Thursday, February 10, 2011
This morning I went shopping for souvenirs. They have a lot of nice things to buy close to the ship. You need to barter a little bit but they were really happy to see to us. I read my book part of the time and visited with lifelong learners and teachers. It is fun to visit with them as they have traveled in a lot of different places and have many stories to tell. Today they fueled our ship and we sailed tonight at
8:00 PM. The vendors all waved and said, “We love you”. To Becky, Thanks for the note. I have read
“ Three Cups of Tea” and enjoyed it. I have been riding the bike a lot and my knee if fine. Just worry about holes in the street. But I am careful. Will have you for dinner this spring.

Breakfast – on the bike, meeting for Globalization. I am really enjoying the class. Had meeting for our Olympics. We are having another rehearsal today for our songs and cheers that we are going to do. Today Carol and I filled out all papers we need to go to the various countries that we are going to see. It took us about 2 hours and then I had to do one over as I made mistakes on it the first time. It was a busy day.
Wednesday, February 2, 2011 Ground Hog Day
Breakfast – water does not taste as salty but I’m still buying bottled water. We hear today there is a big storm around the Chicago area. We had opening ceremonies last night for Olympics. It was really fun and some of the people are so creative. It was really noisy. These students can really yell loud. It wasn’t over until about 11:00 and then we had to set the clock ahead an hour so it was about 12:00 when we went to bed. Tomorrow are the games. I am in the tug of war contest.
Thursday, February 3, 2011
Today is the day for the Olympic games. First was the swimming. That was really funny from our team. Then there was card houses, trivia, wheel barrow races, basketball, tug of war, (I was in that one), spoon with ball in it, dress a person with things from people on the ship (like a treasure hunt), hula hoop, also several others. At 5:30 we had a barbecue dinner - hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, baked beans, cold slaw, fruit and vegetable salads. For dessert chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce. Delicious! Then at 8:00 we had closing ceremonies and reading of winners. The Red Sea won to get off ship in San Diego first when we get home. Anyway it was a fun and loud and exciting day. Our name was the “Sea Salts”.
This was our song:
My bonnie new friends on the ocean
Are traveling to many new lands
Of classes and food there is plenty.
The students and teachers are grand
Bring on! Bring on!
Sights and adventures on land and sea!
Sing on! Sing on!
Life learner “Sea Salts” are we!
Are we winners?
Well I guess!
Sea Salts! Sea Salts!
Yes! Yes! Yes!

We are all tired today from the Olympics yesterday. I did go on the bike this morning and then to global class. This morning it was on going into Ghana. One speaker told about the history. Another told of the music they have and how it came about. They speak English as they were controlled by English colonies for many years. Last night we watched a movie on TV about this music. We have been losing 1 hour each day as we are going. Three time zones.
Saturday, February 5, 2011
Today Linda, Jean, Carol and I are going to wear our sister shirts. Tomorrow we get off the ship. This will be first time in ten days. We will be in Ghana port for five days. Today I got my hair done. The girl I had is from Cape Town, South Africa. She did a nice job. At 2:30 Jean, Carol, Linda and I played hand and foot. I am trying to learn to count the cards for scoring and Linda is learning the game. I have read about six books since being on this voyage. Then at 4:30 we had a meeting on Ghana. After that I had a beer and some snack (gold fish). That really filled me up so I did not eat dinner last night. Then at 7:30 we all had a meeting explaining what time to meet on pier tomorrow for various trips. We also got green sheet which explains all trips and what time and emergency numbers in case you need them. We cannot eat with left hand while we are in Ghana so that may be a problem as I am left handed. Should be interesting day. We are going on Twin City orientation. More tomorrow. Happy Birthday to Jodi today and Charlie tomorrow.

*Tuesday, January 18
Had breakfast and then went to Global class. It is very windy and whitecaps today. Hard to walk on ship. I have had to take elevator today because it is too hard to walk. Went on bike for 30 minutes today. Had group meeting today at 4:30 then dinner. Also had a drink at Fred & Pat’s room. Finished my book “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson. Good book! I have had a cold so went back to room early and read.
Wednesday, January 19
Today it is not windy so I am walking the steps again. Had breakfast and then walked 4th floor halls for some exercise. Also it is time to take malarone starting tonight 1-20 to 2-18 (malaria pills) Sat outside this afternoon. It was a nice day. A professional photographer stopped to talk with me. She has dread locks. Tight little braid and other things weaved in her hair. She has had this one in her hair for three years – on her it looks cute. When she washes her hair it takes all day to dry. When she decides to take them out she will have to cut it out and be bald till it grows back. She is from CA between SF & LA. Her family lives there and she goes home occasionally to visit. She interviewed me about what I think of going on the Amazon River. I have no idea as I have never been cruising before. Joe and Chris had us over for drinks and then we went to dinner. Then Carol and I walked the halls for some exercise. About 9:00 PM they announced we might be going thru rough waters so to make sure our cabins were ready for rough weather. It did not happen but we were ready.
Thursday, January 20
Went to breakfast and met up with our group to order money for upcoming trip. Had a meeting this morning of globalization. It is an interesting class. Hair appointment at 10:00 AM. Girl from South Africa did my hair. I was very pleased with her. Then went on bike for 30 minutes. Now it is time for lunch. This afternoon I sat outside and read my book. Both Jean and Carol sat outside for a while with me. Then our 4:30 meeting. I talked with some interesting people. We are getting to know each other. Reading a good book by Nicholas Sparks, “The Guardian”. We are now on the Amazon River. Saw some ships and towns – also fishing boats and birds and Big flies. They look like horse flies and boy do they bite. Had drinks in our room tonight – then went to dinner. We have nice window in our room so we can see the water. Very good food on this ship so far. Jean Bender’s BD today so we all sang HB in our meeting.
January 21, 2011
Today had breakfast and then rode the bike. Read my book and finished it – one by Nicholas Sparks “The Guardian”. Meeting at 4:30 that we have every day. Then dinner. After dinner went to “open mike” show put on by the students. It was really fun to see. Some of the students in the audience were really dressed up. Girls with really short skirts and 6” high heels. The guys - some suits and dress shirts and good shoes and did they have fun jumping and clapping, etc. Then they had dancing till 11:00 PM – quite a day for them and us too. It was fun to see.
Saturday, January 22
Had breakfast this morning. Then rode the bike 30 minutes. Read new book for a while. At 2:00 this afternoon we all gathered together for games. At 4:00 we had meeting explaining our trip to Manaus on the Amazon River. Tonight we have meeting explaining the city. Tomorrow we will go there. Tonight at cocktail hour we all (15 of us) had our picture taken by John Bender including John himself. It should be a fun day tomorrow.
Sunday, January 23, 2011
Today we went on a tour of the city of Manaus, Brazil. First we went to the fish market. There were fish in every form imaginable. Big, small, little, large fish, water all over the floor. It was interesting. Also saw them cutting up beef. Then walked outside and saw men getting haircuts on the sidewalk. There was a line of people to get haircuts. People that live in area bring bags and pick up fruit, vegetables of every kind. Sunday is a busy market day. Then we toured the opera house – very interesting. Got back at 2:00 for lunch. Did a lot of walking. We were warm when we got back.
Monday and Tuesday, January 24 and 25
We are leaving for our trip on the Amazon River – Beautiful day. Went to where the Amazon, Rio Negro and Soloman rivers meet. When they meet it’s coffee colored like cream in it. It’s from the acid in the water. It takes a few miles for it to mix together and look the same. We then went to a small village for watching them make rubber. Then from there went to some fields and walked about 40 minutes to another village where we had a very nice lunch. Then on to the hotel called Tiwia Echo Resort. Got to our room (like a small cabin) on stilts. This island was flooded out in 2009. It was the highest flood waters they have ever had. It flooded the swimming pool( which is very nice) and part of the dining room and other parts. It all had to be replaced and they built a higher wall to prevent floods from coming again. Then we got in small boats and went to a rubber plant museum. One Englishman had built a nice house there in about 1900. He had everything shipped over from Portugal and when they needed laundry done they shipped it back across to Portugal to have it washed, dried and ironed. It took three months to get it back. The house has beautiful silver, dishes, glassware and antiques. It was fun to see it. Then back for lunch and pack for our trip back. Got to ship about 6:00 PM and had dinner. Went to bed early as I was exhausted. It is interesting to see how they always seem to rip the natives off.
PS I am taking malaria pills now and sometimes they make you dream. I had one the night we stayed in the cabin at Echo Resort. I dreamt there were people dancing across the lake from our cabin in fancy, bright dresses and men in shirts. It seemed very real to me but in the morning I saw it was just another cabin like ours – no dance hall.
Wednesday, January 26, 2011
Today at 9:00 AM we went by bus on a service visit to Raio do sol (like a nursing home) and to the zoo. We went into where they house them. They have been abandoned by families and they are special needs people. For many it will be their only home. They are from babies to 38 years. They went to the zoo on their own bus and we went on ours. We brought balloons to greet them and served them hot dogs and pop. Then they visited the zoo with us – Many of the people had never done this and they seemed delighted. It was interesting and I think we all enjoyed it. People here speak Portuguese.
Thursday, January 27, 2011
Today after breakfast Carol and I walked into Manaus to buy snacks with the rest of our Portuguese money. We did not get much and our money has run out. We then walked back to the ship to get some American dollars and bought a few postcards. After lunch we talked with Dick and Linda and Laura about their trip to Rio. Right now it is pouring rain and thunder and lightning. We are lucky we had nice weather till now as this is the rainy season. We are leaving port today at 5:00 PM. Then we will head to Ghana. We will be at sea for ten days.
Friday, January 28, 2011

At lunch time we visited with our group that went to Rio and all said it is a beautiful city. Had our life long learner group meeting at 4:30. Got our time and date for adopting students to be part of our extended families. I meet with mine tomorrow in room 9 at 5:30 PM for dinner. Tonight we had a birthday party and dinner to celebrate our January birthdays – Linda, Carol B – Jean and Sue – very nice dinner – champagne, horderves, wonderful soup, bread and rolls, sorbet then our table split fish, tenderloin steak, mashed potatoes, vegetables, dessert (cherries jubilee) and ice cream and coffee. Very good meal and lots of fun. You get too full with so much food. Carol and I walked the halls afterwards to get some exercise.

Today we had our global meeting at 9:20 AM. Three good speakers. This class has been very interesting. Then at 11:30 on the bike for 30 minutes. Met with Boyd and Betty and we decided to have ice cream tomorrow with our extended family at 6:30, Feb. 1 up on 7th floor – our treat. I have 10:00 appointment for the bike, 3:30 meeting for the banner and 4:30 meeting for lifelong learners. We had a very interesting speaker. We are planning for the Olympics. We will be singing songs, doing lots of games. I am going to be in a rope pulling contest. We are all making banners and singing and chanting. Everyone from the “Old Geezer” group is doing their share. We all need to wear white shirts and head bands and arm bands. Some are doing relay races, hula hoop contest and building a tower out of cards. It will be a fun evening and day for everyone. We had to change the ice cream date to a different day as our kids (extended family) had other commitments for tomorrow. Went for dinner and came home and showered, finishing my John Grisham book. Was a busy day and I am glad to be done for day. Last day of January.

Left MN this morning. Weather was fine in MN. Went to airport with sister, Carol and her son,
Joe O’Neill. When we got to airport, we were told we could not go to Carolina as airport was closed because of snow storm. We were rerouted to Chicago, then to Miami and then caught a plane there for Nassau around 7:00 PM. Then took a bus to our hotel, The Nassau Palms – ordered pizza in and went to bed early as we were tired.
Tuesday, January 11, 2011
Arrived at ship and got into our rooms at approximately 2:00 PM. It was nice to unpack and get somewhat settled. Everyone arrived today so we were all reunited from various parts of the country. Interesting to people watch. We have a Carnival ship parked next to us. Had dinner together tonight and met with other people on ship for a tour of ship. Took bus to store tonight, shopped for goodies and took cab back. Tomorrow we leave for journey.
Wednesday, January 12, 2011
Went to lots of orientation classes today. After classes we went shopping. I bought a Bahama bag with a zipper across. It is quite large and can carry a lot of items. We had to be back on ship by 2:30 PM. Then at 4:00 PM we had to do a lifeboat drill and wear our life jackets. It took quite a while as everyone has to participate. They have roll call and they cannot leave port until we are all there. After that we had dinner – then at 8:00 PM we sailed from port. Everyone stood outside and waved and cheered as we left. It was about 8:00 PM. It was later than we expected because of the weather conditions across the country for people trying to get here. We are now on our way – my first voyage. After leaving port we went to bed at 9:30 PM. I was really tired. Slept good with rocking of ship.
Thursday, January 13, 2011
Missed breakfast today as I was too late for it. Took shower and cleaned up. At 11:00 AM went on bike for 30 minutes. Then we had lunch. Read my books and visited with different people on our voyage. Lost my cell phone and don’t know where it could be. Had meetings again tonight. They keep us busy. Everyone here is friendly. It’s easy to talk with people including the students.

Another busy day. Had breakfast this morning and then a meeting on globalization. It was very interesting. Glad I’m not a student that has to take tests on it. Went on the bike at 1:00 PM today. Then spent afternoon reading “3 cups of Tea”. Interesting book. It is about Greg Mortenson who built schools in Afghanistan and area. He is a former mountain climber, male nurse and many other hats. Also a humanitarian. Another meeting and greeting at 4:30 PM today. Dinner. Right now we are stopped in Puerto Rico to get fuel. But we cannot leave the ship. It is fun to watch though. Anyway a busy day.

Another busy day. Had breakfast this morning. Then I rode the bike for 30 minutes. Still reading “Three Cups of Tea”. It’s an interesting book. Sat in the sun this afternoon – very nice. Had a 4:30 PM meeting to learn more about the ship. Dinner tonight and then another meeting about leaving the ship tomorrow and going into Dominica and a day trip to the Carib Indians. But we had a lot of instructions for it. Enough for today.
Sunday, January 16, 2011
Yesterday was quite a day. I needed to go to the bathroom and didn’t take time to go. Boy, was that a mistake. About half way through our adventure in Dominica I had a BM when I was not near a bathroom. I took care of it ok but don’t want it to happen anytime soon again. We did have an interesting trip seeing the waterfall on Roseau, Dominica. Also saw houses and then people in village prepared a lunch for us. We all sat at picnic tables and ate. It was a nice day. See Carol’s blog for more information on the Carib Indians.

Today we rented a taxi and toured some of the island. It was so interesting. It was Joe, Jean, Carol and I. Our driver was a nice young man whose village is Scotts Head. He drove us there and we saw the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at the same time. He knew a place to get a beer so we stopped in for one. Also met his Dad and nieces and nephews. He fishes with his dad when not driving a taxi. It was a fun afternoon. He also has a brother that drives a taxi. We are leaving here tonight at 8:00 PM.
