Our Seafaring "Family"

Fred and I have acquired five students who requested to be in the Extended Family program here on board the ship.  SAS Instituted this program so that students would have some older people who they could visit with while away from their family.  It also helps us to mentor the young  if they need any help or support of any kind. We first met Ashton from Philadelphia when we attended our first discussion group.   She came up to us afterward and asked if we would "adopt" her.  We said we would love to!  Then we met Mary Beth from Texas one night.  I asked her if she had signed up for the program and she said yes.  She asked to be included in our group.

We then had a big dinner where everyone met their "kids" that were chosen for them.  There we met our other 3 kids: another girl, Sloane from Detroit and 2boys, David from LA area and Austin from New Hampshire.  They are each very intelligent and excited with this opportunity they have been given.

Since then, we keep seeing them at meetings, classes and meals.  Fred and I took them all out to dinner last Saturday evening on the pool deck.  It was a beautiful evening and we enjoyed getting to know each other.

Just last night, we were eating at a table with 2 new girls we hadn't met yet.   One of them had not signed up for the program and we told her she could join us if she wished.  She was very happy to be included, so we now have 6  "kids"!  That may be enough...we'll see.
